Marthanna Rast Banks Phillips, loving wife of James Albert Phillips of Clemson, went home to be with her Saviour on Monday, April 30, 2018. She was born September 19, 1935, in Columbia, SC the daughter of Jacob Philip and Nancy Owen Daniel Rast, and was a 1953 graduate of Dreher High School. She was first married to David Houser Banks, Jr. of St. Matthews, who pre-deceased her in 1987. She lived for 38 years in St. Matthews where she was a member of St. Paul UMC and taught an adult Sunday School Class for many years and also directed the Ellen Wimberly choir for over 30 years.

Marthanna served as Director of Public Relations at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg (formerly Orangeburg Regional Hospital) from 1974 until she retired in 1991. She was the third public relations officer to be employed by a hospital in SC. She was a charter member of the Carolinas Hospital Public Relations Society, a professional organization encompassing South and North Carolina Hospitals. She was also a member and past president of the Gideon Auxiliary.

Mrs. Phillips was an active member of Pendleton United Methodist Church, where she served as a teacher for the Friendship Sunday School Class for over 15 years.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband of 26 years, James Albert Phillips of Clemson, with whom she served in West Africa as a missionary; six children, David H. Banks III of Townville, SC, Jill Spires (Ray) of Seneca, Betsy Jeter (Tom) of Columbia, James H. "Jim" Banks of St. Matthews, Martin Banks (Kathy) of Cayce, and Ken Banks (Cheryl) of Piedmont; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and step-children, Mark Phillips (Galena) of Mt. Prospect, IL, and Dr. Nancy Phillips Deatherage (Joe) of Knoxville, TN.

Funeral services will be 10 AM, Monday, May 7, 2018 at Pendleton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Bank's Family Cemetery in St. Matthews, SC at 4:00 PM, Monday the same day as the service.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Marthanna Banks Phillips Endowed Scholarship Fund at Columbia International University or the Gideons International, POB 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800
