Joseph C. Mullins, passed away on October 30, 2018 at Clemson Downs, Clemson, SC.

He was born December 5, 1931 and lived with his parents, brother and sister Thomaston, GA. He graduated from Gordon Military College's High School Division in 1949. He began his university studies at Emory at Oxford College in Atlanta, GA and received his BS in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1954. He then served two years as an officer in the US Navy. Joe returned to Georgia Tech and received his MS in 1960 and PhD in 1965, both in chemical engineering. He came to Clemson University in 1965, where he taught chemical engineering. He retired as a full professor in 2004 and was honored as emeritus faculty. While at Clemson, he served as Faculty Senate President in 1987-88. Joe's research at Clemson was in thermodynamics. He also was a consultant for Westvaco, Celanese Corporation and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Joe was an excellent and avid tennis player. For close to 20 years he was one of the top amateur tennis players in South Carolina. He also was an assistant
coach of the Clemson University men's tennis team for several years. He continued to be an advisor and supporter of the university's tennis teams
throughout his life, and donated countless hours in the community mentoring and coaching local youth. He started D.W. Daniel High School girl's tennis
team in the mid 1970s, and the girl's program went on to win several state championships in their division. Joe taught his three children tennis and in
recent years, enjoyed watching his two grandsons' tennis matches.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Spencer Grady Mullins and Sarah Ethel McFarlin, his brother Dr. Spencer G. Mullins, and his wife, Diane Victoria Hudson Mullins. Surviving are son Joseph Grady Mullins and wife, Enith of Anderson, SC; daughters Jessica Claire Mullins and Hilary Mullins Hall and husband, Carl, all of Clemson, SC; sister Martha Brewton of Thomaston, GA; grandchildren, Hayden Hall, Jared Hall, and Kristin Mullins.

The family thanks Joe's special caregiver of five years, Betty Jo Taylor.

A private graveside service will be held at Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.

A reception to celebrate Dr. Mullins' life will be held at the Madren Conference Center in Clemson, SC on November 5, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation or to a charity of one's choice.
