George Louis Mitchell, 93, husband of Sally Ellis Mitchell, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at his home at the Clemson Downs.

Born in Minneapolis, he was the son of the late George Newton and Malinda Graebe Mitchell. George was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and was in the 78th Infantry Division that fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in the Battle of Kesternich and was recently awarded a Purple Heart. In addition to the Purple Heart, he was awarded a Bronze Star and three Battle Stars. After being discharged from the Army, he earned degrees in business and law at the University of Minnesota. He served 20 years in the Air Force Reserves, attaining the rank of Major. In 1955 he joined Jostens Inc., which manufactures and markets school rings, year books and awards. Following retirement from Jostens, George and his wife, Sally retired to Lake Burton in North Georgia and in 2006 relocated to Clemson Downs.

He is survived by his wife, Sally, a son, George L. (Julie) Mitchell of Avignon, France; daughters, Malinda (Dick) Steed of Atlanta, GA, Kate (Nelson) Withers of Kennesaw, GA and Sally Juhasz of Salem, SC; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The family is grateful to Gloria Watt of Walhalla, SC, his caretaker.

George loved his family, friends, sports, and jazz music.

A memorial service will be held in the Clemson Downs Dining Hall on Thursday, July 27 at 4 pm.

The family will greet friends immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Clemson University Foundation (Brooks Center for the Performing Arts), or Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, Clemson, SC.
