Charles Smith Hunter of 201 Brook St., Clemson, SC, died on December 16, 2021. He was born on May 22, 1922 in Griffin, GA, to Bony Morris Hunter and Laura May Smith. He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Miriam Kaufold Hunter. His survivors include two daughters, Patricia Smith of Highlands, NC and Laura Heavner (Chris) of Clemson, SC; six grandchildren: Greg Smith (Caroline) of Bethesda, MD, Lauren Smith Green (Troy) of Griffin, GA, Sam Smith (Brittany) of Marietta, GA, Kat Heavner James (Zack) of Columbia, SC, Smith Heavner of Simpsonville, SC, Caleb Heavner of Seneca, SC, and two great grandchildren Griffin and Charlotte Smith of Bethesda, MD.

Smith served in World War II in the Army Signal Corps. He made his home in Atlanta where he worked as a switchman for Southern Bell Telephone Co. He and Miriam helped establish a mission congregation, St. John Lutheran Church in Griffin and considered it their most significant work.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 26, 2021, at University Lutheran Church, 111 Sloan Street, Clemson. Masks are required. The cremains of Smith and Miriam will be interred at St. John on the 100th anniversary of Smith's birth, May 22, 2022.
