Obituary

Betty Edmondson Bauer, 79, of Clemson, died Tuesday, May 12, 2020. Born February 7, 1941 in Tarboro, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Thomas Edmondson (Margaret Nelms) and the wife of the late Dr. Larry Lee Bauer. Betty graduated from Tarboro High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from Greensboro College and attend graduate school at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She began her teaching career as a Christian Educator at Siler City First United Methodist Church in Siler City, NC and then an elementary school teacher at Frances Lacy Elementary School in Raleigh. After her marriage to Larry in 1966 they moved to Knoxville, TN, had 2 sons, and made wonderful friendships that endured for over 50 years. In 1975, the family settled in Clemson, SC where Betty taught 3rd grade at Ravenel Elementary School in Seneca for over 20 years.

Betty was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church for 45 years where she served in the Chancel Choir. She was also a member of the oldest book club in Clemson, The Browsers Book Club, and member of The Monday Night Book Club. She was also instrumental in forming the Samaritan Stitchers, a group of knitters who provided caps for premature babies and blankets for cancer patients, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Among Betty's favorite pastimes were spending time with family and friends in Clemson and at Fripp Island, feeding and entertaining Clemson students, and spoiling her 3 beloved grandchildren. She had a generous and loving heart and made all around her feel welcome. It cannot go without mentioning that she loved quilting and spending time with her quilting friends, but those who knew her well knew that was a guise for her true passion of buying and collecting fabric. She even had a bumper sticker that read "She who dies with the most fabric wins!". You won, Betty!

Betty is survived by her sons, CW3 George Thomas Bauer (Debbie) and their daughter, Katherine; William Harvey Bauer (Margaret); and their sons, William, and Johnston.

Due to social distancing restrictions, a private family service will be held Thursday, May 21, 2020, at Woodland Cemetery (also known a Cemetery Hill, near Death Valley) on the campus of Clemson University. The family hopes to hold a Memorial service in the near future.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wildewood Downs (Columbia, SC) for their loving care of Betty over the past year.
